Construction Begins on New Highway 1 Overpass in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Construction is officially underway on a major new overpass in Abbotsford that will carry Peardonville Road across Highway 1, replacing the existing crossing and expanding transportation connections in one of the Fraser Valley’s busiest corridors.

Work began September 17, 2026, following the award of a $119.4-million construction contract to B.C.-based Emil Anderson Group. The project is being funded in partnership with the City of Abbotsford and is expected to be completed in 2031.

The new crossing will be built with four lanes, protected bicycle lanes and sidewalks. Improvements will also extend beyond the overpass, with upgrades planned for Peardonville Road and connections on both the north and south sides of Highway 1.

As part of the project, approximately 1.6 kilometres of Highway 1 will be widened. The expanded highway section will include high-occupancy vehicle lanes, electric-vehicle lanes and bus-on-shoulder lanes.

Provincial officials say the improvements are intended to increase highway capacity and provide more reliable travel through Abbotsford as the region continues to grow. The project is part of the broader Fraser Valley Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Program, which includes widening Highway 1 and upgrading several interchanges and structures.

For pedestrians and cyclists, the new crossing will provide dedicated infrastructure rather than requiring people to share the roadway with vehicles. The province says the sidewalks and protected bike lanes are intended to create safer connections across the highway.

Construction will bring temporary traffic changes to the area. Drivers travelling through the Peardonville Road and Highway 1 corridor are being advised to watch for construction signage, allow additional travel time and follow directions from traffic-control personnel.

The Peardonville Road project is one of several major Highway 1 upgrades underway in and around Abbotsford.

Elsewhere in the city, work is progressing on the Mount Lehman Road interchange. That project involves expanding the existing structure from three lanes to five, adding a multi-use path and carrying out seismic improvements. Approximately 3.5 kilometres of Highway 1 are also being widened as part of that work.

The province has also recently carried out construction activities associated with the expanded Mount Lehman overpass, including overnight traffic changes to allow crews to install girders.

Together, the projects represent a significant expansion of Highway 1 infrastructure through the Fraser Valley, with construction expected to continue for several years.

For Abbotsford residents, commuters and commercial drivers, the construction may mean temporary delays, but the completed Peardonville Road crossing is expected to provide a wider connection across Highway 1 and improved facilities for people travelling by car, bicycle or on foot.
